DISCLAIMER: Little bit of a rant here. Don't read this if you're easily offended. You have been warned.
I heard a speaker tonight teaching over Proverbs 7. This chapter is Solomon warning his son away from the dangers of lust. He gives the example of a prostitute luring a man into her 'trap.' While I think this example was formed in a culture completely saturated in sexism and mistreatment of women, I understand the moral behind it. What I really had a problem with was when the speaker said, "There is a reason girls take such a long time on their appearance each day. Girls understand what it is that men look for, and work hard to appeal to them."
Uh oh buddy now you're in some trouble. First of all, OH PLEASE I absolutely do not straighten my hair, put on make-up, or choose my clothing in order to please men. Good grief! That is such a joke! Can I point out that women in any culture will always look similar, just as men in any culture will appear similar. I appear the way I do because society has provided expectations for the appearance of men and women. If I don't conform at least partially to these expectations then it would be a cultural handicap! For instance if I never bathed, brushed my hair or teeth, and wore my father's old work overalls this would be a real obstacle for me.
People manipulate their appearances according the the goals they want to achieve. Granted there are women AND men who's goals are to appeal to the opposite sex. But for PETE'S SAKE please don't stereotype entire groups of people based on a minority. Blah...
Alright. I think my little feminist rant is over now. Thanks for listening folks.

i have problems with things like this as well, like women are symbols for or literally evil, lust, and sin. you know? aren't men scientifically more sexual than we are? and i definitely hear more about men manipulating women with sex than the other way around. i mean, it can go both ways, but all this "shhhh, woman, you are just trying to seduce me to do wrong, now go sit in the back of the church and don't say anything!"
